Based on decades of painstaking research into court records, this book is the true story of the three Supreme Court trials of the first slave freed by a then-young lawyer, Abraham Lincoln, in Illinois in 1841.
 

In 2009, the Editor of the Illinois History Journal called this body of research "the only story of Lincoln that is really new." Nance actively tried to free herself through legal means on several occasions, but it was only when she and Lincoln worked together that they both won. Her struggles began as a when she was just a girl, and lasted over 15 years.
